  • The prevalence of diabetes among African Americans is about 70 percent higher than among whites. About one in every 375 African American newborns has a form of sickle cell disease; the rate is about one in every 58,000 for whites. Being armed with these facts is not enough, so this collection of clearly-written articles gives general readers basic information about a range of indications, treatments, preventative measures and concerns. Topics and conditions covered include the general health and social status of African American women, heart disease, breast cancer, sickle cell disease, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, and depression. Articles also address the consequences of poverty and homelessness, the ramifications of informed consent, the emotional process of seeking health, and a literary perspective on the roots of coping.

Dr. Collins' book is a must read for every black American, be they male or female, to learn about and understand the unique health and social issues faced by black women. As black women, we are responsible for our own health and well being and must learn how to get help to address these issues. As for black men, they have wives, daughters, mothers and sisters that they can assist in improving their well being.

African American women, the backbone of a vibrant and evolving community, are too often portrayed either as broad-shouldered superwomen or with a plethora of pathologies. Dr. Catherine Fisher Collins has put together a collection that goes past clichés to look at the vicissitudes of African American women's lives, especially around an invisible set of health issues that effect African American women. From diabetes to depression, from heart disease to homelessness, from HIV to coping strategies, this collection fully examines the health and social status of African American women and presents us as kaleidoscopic, complicated, and resourceful. Catherine Fisher Collins is to be commended for collecting these essays, for expanding the perspective on African American women, and for providing a resource for those who would seek to understand.
Description: Written by a team of experts that includes doctors, nurses, social workers, psychologists, and chemists, this handbook focuses on the diseases that pose the greatest threat to African American women today. Topics include African American women and heart disease, sickle cell, breast cancer, diabetes, HIV and AIDS, as well as mental illness. Social issues that affect health are also examined, including poverty, homelessness, stress, racism, sexism, and treatment disparities. Two thirds of the chapters are all-new with fresh topics and information, and the remaining chapters have been completely updated. This book will be of interest to health professionals and professors, social workers, counselors and students in these fields, as well as African American women seeking more information on these health threats.
