Reviews:
Bogue (Univ. of Tennessee) gleans meaningful insights about the culture of effective leadership from the personal stories of college leaders as well as his own personal experiences. The book consists of 12 chapters that explain by illustrations and examples how the "stewards of collegiate mission"--college leaders at all levels including trustees-- can and should function. He also discusses pitfalls to be avoided as college leaders try to construct an ethical legacy. The book is written in an engaging style that explains how ideas and values inform one another. The book ends with an afterword that deals with reflections on what skills and values are necessary for a leader and how the culture of leadership should be implemented. This insightful work will help people who are current leaders, and those who will become leaders, to more effectively become "stewards of collegiate mission." Recommended. Graduate, research, and professional collections.

Endorsement From Dr. Allen Edwards, President
Pellissippi State Technical Community College, Knoxville:
Leadership Legacy Moments
is a wonderful blend of organizational theory and leadership principles tied together by rich personal experiences that make it an interesting and powerful read. It is a great text for those interested in careers in higher education administration and for those who want to experience what leadership in modern colleges and universities is really like.
Endorsement From Dr. Dennis Jones, President
National Center for Higher Education Management \ Systems, Boulder:
The author is both a scholar and skilled practitioner of the science and art of leadership. While this book provides an excellent overview of the different dimensions of the functions and methods of leadership, its major contribution is the thoughtful articulation of the key role of civility and integrity in the discharge of a leader's duties. At a time when ethical lapses are too frequently in the news, the book is a cogent reminder that institutional leadership is a special calling that requires not only knowledge and skill, but a set of values that reflects our highest aspirations for our institutions and the students who are educated within.
Endorsement From Dr. Bruce Heilman,
Chancellor, University of Richmond:
It is not often that we read a book on leadership or education that is hard to put down before completion. This is such a book. The style is comfortable, the content is both philosophical and practical, and the examples of real life are worthy of emulation. Having spent 50 years in senior leadership positions, 21 of those as president, I wish I could have read this book prior to those experiences.
Endorsement From Brian Noland,
Chancellor, West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission, Charleston:
Dr. Bogue's most recent work
Leadership Legacy Moments
provides valuable guidance for college leaders as they embark upon the mission of stewarding academe in a time of critical change. The book challenges us all to embrace the passion of leadership, while being ever mindful of the public trust that is afforded to the modern college president. Built upon a legacy of leadership, the book is a must read for presidents, scholars, and students of leadership.
Endorsement From Dr. Patricia Sullivan,
Chancellor, University of North Carolina at Greensboro:
The strength of Grady Bogue's insightful work is the integration of theory and practice in academic administration based on important academic values. His illustrations are cogent, clear, and useful to link theory and practice for readers of this work. I think it is both inspiring and helpful in reminder leaders in the academy of how value laden our work must be.
Endorsement From Dr. William Snyder,
Chancellor Emeritus, University of Tennessee, Knoxville:
In my seven years as Chancellor at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, achieving a proper balance among teaching, research, outreach and promoting a value based institution represented my greatest challenge as a leader. I wish Grady Bogue's book
Leadership Legacy Moments
had been available to me. I recommend it to academic leaders at all levels.
Endorsement From Dr. John Thelin,
University Research Professor, University of Kentucky, Franklin:
For college and university administrators and manager who wish to become genuine campus leaders, Grady Bogue's book is essential reading. The challenge is not to go from good to better, but rather from smart to wise. Bogue's combination of scholarship and experience helps us achieve this by bringing sorely needed insight to decision making in the American "Knowledge Enterprise" of the 21st century.
Endorsement From Dr. Edward Kormody,
Chancellor Emeritus, University of Hawaii at Hilo,
Former President, University of West Los Angeles:
In this aptly titled book, Professor Bogue's facile use of words and phrases coupled with numerous examples distilled from his and other's experiences make not only a highly readable, but also singularly insightful exploration of the role of leadership in higher education.
Endorsement From Dr. Barbara Burch,
Vice President for Academic Affairs, Western Kentucky University:
Leadership Legacy Moments
is written in a style that even the busiest of collegiate leaders will find an easy and compelling read. It is a rich repository of best leadership practices and ways in which they may be utilized. Threaded throughout the book is a recurring theme that encourages the reader to reflect upon style, values, and commitment to the compelling and powerful mission that resides with our colleges and universities.
Description:
Written for college leaders at all levels as well as for trustees, this book engages the reader, via narrative and analysis, with the reflective and the practical knowledge essential to a constructive legacy. Leaders of colleges and universities hold in trust an enterprise of complex mission, governance, and outcome. Most will take office with accompanying media celebration of their past records and future promise. Each will exit with a legacy. A few will leave behind tragic legacies of defeated spirits, corrupted organizations, and shameful ethical records. We may hope for collegiate leaders who will leave behind faculty and staff talents of greater promise, worthy goals achieved in concert with faculty and staff, and value cultures that inspire curiosity, courage, and compassion.
