Reviews:
The modern homosexual movement has bloomed and diversified over the past 35 years. This handy two-volume set reviews current research, policy, and practice regarding lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) youth throughout the world but primarily in the United States....[t]his groundbreaking and authoritative work would be useful for students and counselors of LGBT youth. Recommended for academic and specialized collections.
—Library Journal
May 1, 2006
Both the entries and the extensive introduction offer a good overview of the current status of LGBT youth in many countries....This book will be of great use to educators and college students working on related topics. Recommended. All levels.
—Choice
May 2006
This two-volume set is designed to help teen readers, educators, and parents understand the complex issues facing people throughout the world regarding sexual orientation....As many students are questioning their sexual identities in high school, this set can help educators and parents as well as students understand the issues and foster tolerance....[t]his important reference can provide answers or open up dialog about a variety of controversial issues. Recommended.
—Library Media Connection
August/September 2006
[S]ucceeds in detailing lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender sexualities as they relate to youth and education. Sears and his team of contributors have done much to synthesize and advance the dialogue and further our knowledge and understanding of youth, education, and sexualities. Recommended for large public libraries as well as academic libraries.
—Booklist/Reference Books Bulletin

The design of the set is particularly well done. In each entry, keywords that lead to other entries are in bold typeface. A see-also portion of each entry in included at the bottom with a list of keywords. At the end of each piece is a bibliography for the entry, and on most, there are recommended Web sites....[t]he complete coverage, excellent design, and the rarity of some of the information available is recommended to libraries with a need.

The fine 2-volume set
Youth, Education, and Sexualities: An International Encyclopedia
is an excellent college-level recommendation: it features over 200 entries written by an international roster of experts ranging from educators to researchers, and it examines the policy and research surrounding youth who are members of the gay or transgender community. Yes, it's very specific--but there's a wealth of detail from legal and social issues to health issues and more surrounding LGBT youth, and hundreds of gay-straight alliances in high schools and colleges, and all are given important details which would be missing in less detailed coverages. An excellent specialty collection recommendation.
—Midwest Book Review - California Bookwatch
January 2007
Description:
Featuring more than 200 entries written by an international roster of experts, this work is the most authoritative and accessible source available for educators, researchers and students seeking an understanding of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) youth. This ground-breaking work examines policy, practice and research concerning youth who are often the victims of bullying and harrassment. Interdisciplinary, engaging articles examine the policy, practice, and research concerning the role, responses, and responsibilities of schools, educators, and the larger community to LGBT youth. Ranging from the the school curriculum to popular culture, topics include: gender roles, AIDS and HIV education, teen pregnancy, rural youth, prostitution, mental health, race and racism, counseling, gender roles, identity development, discrimination, anti-bias curriculum, children of LGBT parents, film, homophobia, legal issues, various ethnic groups, prejudice, religion, stereotypes, social class, college youth, and youth culture. There is international coverage as well of the United Kingdom, Asia, Australia, South America, and Europe.
Research and scholarship on sexualities, youth, and education has exploded, especially in North America, Australia, and Europe. Over the past 25 years, remarkable progress has been made politically, culturally, and educationally with respect to LGBT and Queer concerns. For example, hundreds of gay-straight alliances operate in high schools and colleges; court settlements have resulted in greater administrative sensitivity to harassment of gay students; and the number of college courses including gay concerns and issues is growing. While there are increasing numbers of articles and books covering LGBT issues and life, this work is the first comprehensive source to look at the important nexus of education and LGBT youth.
