Greenwood Guidelines

Greenwood Press reference books for academic, school, and public libraries are dedicated to providing needed reference material to students and the general public. If you would like to be considered for a project and do not have a particular project in mind, contact the Greenwood Press acquisitions editor who develops works in your discipline (please see this list of editorial contacts). Submit your vita and list of interests and areas of specialization.

If you have a reference project that you would like to propose for publication, please submit your proposal to the acquisitions editor in the program who handles your discipline. Your proposal should be brief and include the following:

  1. Scope—In a page or two, describe the scope, rationale, and direction that the work will take and explain why the work fills an information gap in library collections.
  2. Content—Prepare a tentative table of contents or list of entries. The list of entries does not have to be complete, but a good sampling should be provided. If your project is a contributed work, you need not have all your contributors assigned before you submit the proposal. Include a sample entry or describe the specific elements that each entry will contain. For encyclopedia or dictionary style works, each entry should conclude with a short, relevant bibliography suitable for student research. What appendixes do you plan? Do you plan to include photographs and/or illustrations? If so, how many?
  3. Length—Please estimate the number of words (assuming that the average number of words on each double-spaced manuscript page is 300).
  4. Competition—If there are any other recent reference works (published in the last 5 years) on the same topic, list them (include author, title, publisher, date of publication, number of pages, and price).
  5. Please indicate how your proposed work is different or supersedes other works on the same subject.
  6. Biographical Information—Include a paragraph on the author's credentials or a vita.
  7. Deadline for Delivery—Please give a realistic estimate of how long it will take you to complete your work on the manuscript. We prefer manuscripts that can be delivered 12 months after contract signing but will consider up to 24 months for more exhaustive works.
  8. Sending Your Proposal—Mail or Fax your proposal to the acquisitions editor or send it electronically to the editor's email address. Email attachments should be sent in Microsoft Word. Please limit your email proposal to no more than 8 pages.

Please forward your proposal to the appropriate editor. Editorial contacts are listed here, by subject area. If you cannot identify the appropriate editor, send an email to editorial@greenwood.com outlining your proposal, or mail to:
